The Health Benefits of Restorative Fitness
The Health Benefits of Restorative Fitness
If we close our eyes and envision “exercise,” there are probably a few disciplines that come to mind - running, cycling or high-intensity, cardiovascular exercises such as jumping jacks or burpees. Yet, these challenging disciplines and exercises are just part of what makes up a well-rounded exercise routine. In order to get the most out of being physically active, balancing high-intensity, aerobic exercises with restorative fitness should be a priority.
Restorative fitness is any discipline that promotes active recovery such as certain types of yoga and stretching. Through restorative fitness, we may:
Support recovery
Promote flexibility and mobility
Ease pain
Improve balance and stability
Prevent injuries
Avoid burnout
Other benefits to restorative fitness include supporting mental health through an emphasis on breathing, slowing down and turning inwards, as well as improving abilities to perform everyday, functional movements such as climbing stairs.
