5 Reasons We Shouldn’t Fear Whole Grains

Here’s a question I hear often, “aren’t grains bad for you because they contain carbohydrates?” No. Like all plant foods, whole grains contain carbohydrates. However, we do not need to fear whole grains. Whole grains and whole grain products can be enjoyed as part of a healthy eating pattern.

  1. Nutrients. A whole grain has an intact bran, germ and endosperm. These three components of a whole grain provide fiber, phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and some protein and fat. Whole grains also have phytochemicals, biologically active compounds found only in plants that have powerful health properties as antioxidants. Incorporating whole grains into your way of eating increases your overall nutrient intake.

  2. Balance. For a balanced plate, aim to craft a meal with carbohydrates, protein and fat. A meal with several nutrients offers fullness and satisfaction after eating. For example, pair wild rice with salmon and green veggies with tahini or pair quinoa with edamame, veggies and a peanut-based dressing.

  3. Taste. Whole grains taste delicious and add a lot of flavor to meals. Some of our favorite whole grain recipes include: Mediterranean Quinoa with Pistachios, Avocado Toast with Sauerkraut, Greek Farro with Roasted Peppers, Quinoa Bowl with Spicy Peanut Dressing, Sorghum Pilaf, Whole Wheat Pasta with Beans and Greens and Barley Salad with Sauerkraut Brine Dressing.

  4. Cultural traditions. Whole grains are a staple in many cuisines around the world. Culturally significant dishes with whole grains such as Tabbouleh should be celebrated and enjoyed across generations.

  5. Variety. Whole grains are a broad category of ingredients that add variety to a way of eating. Restricting whole grains eliminates an entire food group that offers nutrition, health benefits and delicious flavor. We benefit from incorporating many nutritious foods in a way of eating.
